Abstract
This thesis focuses on the jointed field of seismic design and design optimisation,
including topology, shape and size optimisation. As the seismic occurrence has the
largest impact among natural hazards in highly populated regions, this research
addresses matters of improving seismic design in terms of structural shape,
configuration and use of resources, aided by the design optimisation tools. The
research methodology employed for this thesis relies on an iterative process of
modelling and optimising, using the Altair OptiStruct software package. The output
of this research revealed a curvilinear structural configuration accompanied by an
unconventional lateral force resisting structural system. Following the findings
within this research, future studies are encouraged to build improved simulations of
the dynamic actions using the latest Equivalent Static Load Method.
