Altair Optimization Symposium at Northwestern University Showcases Student Innovation

Earlier this month, as part of the Altair Fellowship Program, Altair and the Mechanical Engineering Department of Northwestern University co-sponsored the 4th bi-annual symposium to discuss multidisciplinary design and optimization on the Evanston, Ill., campus.  The agenda may be viewed here.  Members of the university community, regional Altair customers, and Altair representatives were in attendance.


Dr.-Ing. Ming Zhou of Altair kicked off the formal agenda by presenting a paper on the symbiotic link between topology optimization and 3D printing.  Other topics were showcased, including solar panel material optimization, various structural optimization applications, and crashworthiness in vehicles.

A highlight of the event was the poster session, in which fourteen projects were presented by two-person student teams.  The posters were judged by a panel of 13 symposium participants.  Best Buy gift certificates were awarded to the top three teams at the conclusion of the symposium.

The top three team projects profiled some interesting optimization scenarios:

  1. Optimization of a Baja SAE Vehicle Structure
  2. Microstructural Image Binarization with Machine Learning and Associated Optimization
  3. Topology Optimization with Genetic Algorithms
