Mechatronic product development is a multi-disciplinary endeavor which requires the design of a mechanical system and its accompanying electronics. A brute force design approach in which the distinct elements of each domain are designed independently and then integrated subsequently typically requires many redundant design cycles. This inefficiency in design is explained by the observation that a perfectly designed mechanical component is not necessarily compatible with a perfectly designed electronic component, and vice versa. A modern design approach therefore mitigates the design inefficiencies of a brute force approach by driving the design of individual components with system responses that gauge the interactions between the components. The synergies between the components are exploited, and we call this approach a Model-Based Development (MBD).
