In our day to day life we use devices like mobile, television, radio, etc where the information is transferred from one end to another end without any physical medium like cables or optical fibres.  This type of communication is known as wireless communication and it is the fastest growing technology in the area of communications.

In wireless communication, the information is transferred in the form of electromagnetic waves. Since the waves propagating in space do not have any guidance, the medium is known as an unguided medium. Signal propagation through space is accomplished with antennas.  A transmitter antenna converts electric signals to electromagnetic signals and a receiver antenna receives these electromagnetic signals and converts them back into electric signals. Hence, the signals are carried by electromagnetic waves.

The study of wave propagation plays a vital role in determining the performance of a system.  If a transmitted signal reaches the receiver without hitting any obstructions, it is known as propagation along the line-of-sight (LOS) path. Although in practical scenarios, as the waves move from the transmitter to the receiver, they lose energy or power due to various phenomena like reflection, diffraction, scattering, propagation path loss.

Let us consider a simple scenario of placing a wireless router within office premises, we must find the best place so that it is accessed by many but the challenges here are several elements in an indoor environment like furniture, walls, windows, etc. that contribute to reflection, refraction and scattering of the original signal. Altair WinProp, is the simulation tool for wave propagation study. we can model the building interior and analyse the wave propagation. This gives us a highly accurate result with short computation time.

Similarly, many other wave propagation analyses can be done by student engineers to enhance their knowledge in the field of wireless propagation and radio network planning and this also helps them in their projects/research.

Altair WinProp is a complete suite of tools in the domain of wireless propagation and radio network planning. With applications ranging from satellite to terrestrial, from rural via urban to indoor radio links which includes the fields of,

Automotive – antenna evaluation,

Telecommunication – radio network planning for urban scenario and indoor radio network planning,

Wireless Sensors – planning of sensor network,

Railway – in-cabin radio coverage,

Aerospace – airport radio coverage, etc.

WinProp’s innovative wave propagation models combine accuracy with short computation time.

Altair WinProp supports the import of antenna patterns from several sources, including Feko. You can design the antennas and calculate the radiation patterns in Feko and use those patterns to represent transmitting and receiving antennas in the radio channel analysis in WinProp.

WinProp is a leading software in the domain of wireless propagation and radio network planning.

The WinProp software suite:

  • ProMan: Wave propagation and radio network planning
  • CoMan: Connectivity simulator for sensor and MESH networks
  • WallMan: Graphical editor for vector building databases
  • TuMan: Graphical editor for tunnels and stadiums
  • AMan: Graphical editor for antenna patterns
  • CompoMan: Editor for components used in wireless indoor network installations
