A transmitter antenna converts electric signals to electromagnetic signals and a receiver antenna receives these electromagnetic signals and converts them back into electric signals. Hence, the signals are carried by electromagnetic waves.
The study of wave propagation plays a vital role in determining the performance of a system. If a transmitted signal reaches the receiver without hitting any obstructions, it is known as propagation along the line-of-sight (LOS) path. Although in practical scenarios, as the waves move from the transmitter to the receiver, they lose energy or power due to various phenomena like reflection, diffraction, scattering, propagation path loss.
