I recently took a trip back to see some of my former colleagues and students at Altair’s UK headquarters in Leamington Spa. While there I was put centre stage and asked to give a talk about established and upcoming design optimisation techniques. Altair are of course known for their proficiency in optimisation technology development and expertise in applying these technologies to produce high performance products, but it is always useful to review the underlying theories to really understand what’s going on ‘under the hood’.
I gave a similar talk at a NAFEMS conference back in March this year, an event dedicated to sharing knowledge on the use of optimisation techniques to improve product performance, reduce weight and mass and minimise production costs. As all industries are under increasing pressure to deliver innovative products to market, the use of these optimisation techniques will only continue to rise. As a result, the subject has become a key part of our engineering course at the University of Leeds as we prepare students for a life in industry.
