A Leading Cause of Disability and Mortality Traumatic brain injury (TBI) resulting from blunt head impact is a major cause of disability and mortality in the United States. Approximately 2 million TBI cases occur each year. The great majority of these injuries are classified as mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) or concussion. There is increased awareness of sports-related MTBI as an important public health
problem affecting a large number of people despite the use of protective headgear.
Development of World’s Smallest TV Antenna
Television is considered as one of the most important media of communications in Mexico. Several tests conducted in cities like Tijuana, Guadalajara and Mexico City, demonstrated that oftentimes the challenge is the successful transmission of signals to some of the more remote areas, especially indoors.
Typically a Yagi array antenna is used for
TV reception. Yagi antenna provides a directed beam that goes towards the TV tower, permitting a high degree of signal reception. Dr. Tecpoyotl’s team developed an antenna that is miniaturized into a smaller footprint, while at the same time improving the signal stability, compared with other passive antennas.
The TUfast Eco team of Technical University Munich uses simulation and optimization to develop energy-efficient vehicles.
In addition to being very successful at the international Shell Eco-Marathon, the team recently celebrated achieving a new world record for energy efficiency of electrically powered vehicles.
The statute of the TUfast Eco team demands that each year an entirely new vehicle has to be developed. No component of the previous year is allowed to be used for the new competing vehicle. This is to ensure that the technical expertise and development approaches of previous years are used to develop the new vehicle and passed on to the new team.
The combined use of topology optimization and additive manufacturing is quite common in industries such as automotive or aerospace, but up to now this technology combination is rarely used in architectural projects. To investigate the potential offered by the symbiosis of topology optimization and additive manufacturing for architectural projects, Bayu Prayudhi, an architectural student of the University of Delft, re-designed an existing architectural project and included topology optimization upfront in the design process. The object to be re-designed was the outdoor canopy located at Baku international airport in Azerbaijan.
More specifically, for the monocoque suspension mass optimization, CAD geometry was initially imported into HyperMesh and a meshed model was created. After assigning composite material properties to the primary monocoque structure and aluminum properties to the bonded end cap, design and non-design regions of the model were specified. Loads were also input, and the maximum monocoque displacement was constrained to a maximum allowed value. A three-step OptiStruct optimization process for composite structures was then applied to minimize the monocoque volume. After analyzing the optimized results in HyperView, the team created a manufacturable geometry, which was subsequently evaluated using linear finite element analysis to ensure that all design requirements were met.
The 1001VELAcup is an initiative where students from Italian and foreign universities develop and build boats to compete in regattas. To participate in the race, the teams have to design and manufacture their own boats which have to comply with a number of special class rules: The boats for the 1001VELAcup contest cannot be longer than 4.60 m and not wider than 2.10 m. MICHAEL SÜß is a Research Fellow at the Technische Universität Dresden who is currently working on his PHD focusing on design guidelines for additive manufacturing/electron beam melting. In addition to this, Michael also works very closely with the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM. The Fraunhofer IFAM is one of Europe’s leading research institutions in the fields of adhesive technology, material sciences, and manufacturing techniques.
